The short answer
A used phone or tablet is worth what people will pay for it on the resale market, and that changes over time. Five things decide where your device lands: the model, its storage, its condition, its carrier status, and when you sell it. The fastest way to get a real number is an instant quote, which takes a minute and costs nothing.
1. The model and its age
The model matters most. Newer models are worth more, and Pro and Pro Max models are worth more than the standard model from the same year. Every year a device gets older, and every time a newer one comes out, its value drops.
Similar models are easy to mix up, and the difference can be large. Check the exact model name before you start your quote. On an iPhone or iPad it’s in Settings > General > About. On Android it’s in Settings > About phone.
2. Storage
More storage means a higher price for the same model. The gap is usually biggest on recent models. Storage is shown on the same About screen as the model name. Choose the storage the device actually has, not how much you’re using.
3. Condition
Condition is the factor you have the most say over. A phone with light wear is worth noticeably more than the same phone with a cracked screen or a battery that no longer holds a charge. Damaged devices still have value, but the offer is lower.
You pick a condition grade when you get your quote, and we check the device against it on arrival. Describing it honestly gets you an accurate price the first time. What happens if inspection changes your offer lists the grades and what we check.
A few things that help:
- Keep a case and screen protector on the device until you sell it.
- Wipe it down before you pack it. Dirt and smudges can hide or look like scratches.
- Don’t open the device or have it repaired just to sell it. A repair rarely adds more value than it costs.
4. Carrier status (phones)
An unlocked phone works on any carrier, so more buyers want it. A carrier-locked phone can get a lower offer than an unlocked one. If you aren’t sure, your carrier can tell you whether the phone is locked to them. Tablets don’t ask about carrier status.
5. When you sell
Used prices tend to fall over time, and they fall faster around new launches. Selling while your device is still current usually gets you more than holding on to it. The best time to sell your phone covers the launch calendar.
What doesn’t change the price
- The original box and accessories. The quote is for the device itself. Keep the charger, cable, and case.
- Data and settings. You reset the device before you send it, and we wipe it again on intake.
