How to pack and ship a phone for a trade-in

What to do before you pack, what goes in the box, how to pack a phone or tablet so it arrives safely, and how the free prepaid label works.

Before you pack

  1. Back up your data, then sign out of iCloud or Google and turn off Find My.
  2. Factory reset the device.
  3. Take out the SIM card, and the memory card if the device has one.

How to reset your iPhone or Android before selling it covers each step for iPhone, iPad, Samsung Galaxy, and Google Pixel.

What goes in the box

Just the device. The quote is for the device itself, so keep the charger, cable, case, and original box.

How to pack it

  • Use a sturdy box. A small cardboard box is better than a padded envelope. Envelopes bend, and a bent envelope can crack a screen.
  • Wrap the device. Bubble wrap is best. Packing paper or a soft cloth works too.
  • Fill the gaps. Add padding until the device can’t move when you shake the box.
  • Seal it well. Tape every seam, including the bottom.

Label and drop-off

When you lock in your quote, we email you a free, tracked, prepaid USPS label. Print it and tape it flat on the top of the box. Cover any old labels or barcodes so the scanner only reads ours. Then drop the box at a USPS location.

Ship before your quote expires. It’s valid for 14 days, and the date is in your label email. Keep the receipt or tracking number until we confirm the device has arrived.

After it ships

Enter the ID from your confirmation email on the tracking page to see where your trade-in stands. When the device arrives, we inspect it and wipe it. Payment is processed within 1–2 business days after approval. Bank or payment-provider delays of 1–3 business days may apply after processing. We pay by PayPal, Zelle, or check.
